These military expeditions, fought to regain the "Holy Land", are known as the Crusades.The Crusades of the Christian nations of the Occident were allegedly religiously motivated campaigns, intending to free Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the hands of the 'unbelievers'. The battles soon became instruments of political power.The term 'Crusade' was soon applied not only to a war against non-Christians, but also on a war against heretics. |
